Have Yourself a Very Merry Privacy Week!
January 21-27 is Data Privacy Week, and we’re turning to one of the biggest privacy nerds we know for recommendations during what he considers the most wonderful time of year!
Seasons greetings! My name is Jonathan Joseph (call me JJ). By day I’m Head of Solutions at Ketch, which I love because it has let me turn my obsession with data privacy into a full-time job.
For the uninitiated, Data Privacy Week is a great chance to stoke your own privacy excitement. BTW, is it Happy Data Privacy Week or Merry Data Privacy Week? Not sure ;). In any case, below are some ways you can join the festivities.

Data Privacy Week is the one chance a year to make privacy front and center. Whether you are a seasoned privacy wonk or a curious beginner, here are a few ways you can take advantage of the week to learn more and connect with some of the brilliant people working to improve privacy around the world.
Events to Attend:
A conversation with Arielle Garcia on “What Should ‘Privacy-Safe’ Mean for Brands in 2024?” (Friday, January 26 @ 12 PM ET). Arielle, a world-leading expert in responsible data use who founded her own privacy consultancy, will join me in an unfiltered conversation on how privacy standards will impact brands in 2024. Loyal ETP readers will remember Arielle from our live event in NYC last November, and she always offers tremendous insights for anyone in data-driven media. This event caps off a week of privacy-themed events hosted by Ketch.
Kelley Drye’s Webinar on Privacy Litigation Trends (Wednesday, January 23 @ 3 PM ET). Privacy enforcement action is on the rise and liability concerns are shifting. Kelley Drye’s Webinars are always valuable for anyone tracking the cutting-edge of privacy law, and hearing from several of their top partners such as Lauri Mazzuchcetti, Whitney Smith, Alysa Hutnik, and Chris Tarbell will be well-worth your time.
Find an IAPP Event Near You! The IAPP hosts privacy events all around the world for their members. If that’s you, there’s no better time to find an event near your and meet with other privacy enthusiasts in person.
Content to Consume:
We Need to Take Back Our Privacy. Zeynep Tufekci’s 2022 op-ed became an instant rallying cry for the privacy community. Always worth reading (and re-reading!)
This Is Why Google Paid Billions for Apple to Change a Single Setting. Is it ok to include a second piece by Tufekci? Who cares, it’s so good I’ll do it anyways. This piece explains the privacy implications of Google’s $26 billion payments to be the default search engines on Apple products.
Answering AI’s Biggest Questions Requires an Interdisciplinary Approach. Privacy requires a big-tent approach if we want to build durable solutions that benefit all people. While this piece, written by ETP board chair Tom Chavez, focuses on AI companies, the principle applies to any organization thinking about privacy as well.
How to Design an Ethical Data Ecosystem for the AI Era. Authored by two of the ETP’s board members, Maritza Johnson and Sara Watson, they pull on their practical industry experience to explain how to build ethical data ecosystems.
Biden’s Executive Order on AI shows privacy is foundational to responsible AI. For the more technically-inclined, Abigail Dubiniecki, a self-proclaimed “certified privacy geek” wrote this piece earlier this year. The article can be viewed on her LinkedIn in case you’re stuck behind the paywall.
